Indigenous Team Alberta History

Indigenous Cup

The Team Alberta Indigenous program was launched in 2023 as a showcase initiative at the Canada Cup. The inaugural event featured a matchup between Alberta and Saskatchewan, highlighting the high level of Indigenous football talent within both provinces.

In 2024, the initiative expanded with the inclusion of Manitoba, evolving into a three team competition held in conjunction with the the World Junior Championships in Edmonton.

Significant growth ocurred in 2025 with the establishment of a formal tournament in Winnipeg. The addition of Northern Ontario expanded the field to four teams and introduced a structured competition format, including semifinal matchups and a championship final.

The long-term vision of the program is to continue this trajectory of growth and develop a national level Indigenous event, welcoming participating teams from across Canada.
